What are the benefits of NAWA membership and what separates us from other women’s art organizations?

HISTORY:

  • NAWA is the first professional women’s art organization in the U.S. It was established in 1889 by five women (Anita C. Ashley, Adelle Frances Bedell, Elizabeth S. Cheever, Grace Fitz-Randolph and Edith Mitchill Prellwitz) because they could not exhibit their work in galleries, museums and salons
  • Women artists are juried into membership by their professional peers
  • NAWA members and their work are catalogued in the NAWA historic archive. The archive and image files are available to curators and scholars. The NAWA catalogs, exhibitions, programs, events, advertising, presentations, press releases and membership activities are also archived at: The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Whitney Museum of American Art; Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum and Rutgers University Library; Museum of Modern Art; National Museum of Women in the Arts; Smithsonian Institution Archive; Ryerson Burnham Libraries at the Art Institute of Chicago; Frick Art Reference Library; New York Public Library; the Film and Fine Arts Library, Littauer Center, Harvard University; and the Library of Congress
