Raisa Nosova, Back to Shared Land, painting, 24x36.

My work opens a platform for discussion on the topics of resilience, trauma and cultural displacement. I seek to bring awareness to the emotional baggage and the struggle that survivors have to conceal in daily life by exploring psychological connection to daily life environments. My large-scale oil paintings employ portraits of individuals behind masks, elements of wreckage and fragments of nostalgic interiors creating an intersection between reality and idealization, between opportunities and limitations, between grand and mundane . Somehow, presence and absence could exist separately and together in parallel. Traumatic life experiences such as childhood separation from family and from home, war, as well as my becoming a mother during the Covid-19 pandemic have created layers of fog over memories. In my studio practice I dissect, peel, slice, unveil and reorganize extreme experiences to make sense of the fragmented and the destroyed in search of a feeling of belonging.

Through my paintings, I've become attentive to the splendid drama of my everyday world. I'm intrigued by both the natural and man-made world and our place as humans in it. Through accentuating the inherent qualities of man-made materials like metal, concrete, and asphalt and the way artificial light illuminates and reflects on these materials, I try to transform what could be considered mundane subject matter to the sublime.

NAWA is excited to announce that this week's talented #NAWAArtistOfTheWeek is: Fleur Palau! 🐇 @fleurpalau

Fleur Palau is a painter and sculptor based in New Hampshire. She grew up in a home surrounded by art. Her mother, Mary Rose Palau, was a professional fine artist, and her father, Julio Palau, was an architect. Their house was full of music, paintings in progress, books, and much-heated debate in the evenings. Models and students of Fleur's mother traipsed in and out of the studio attached to the house for painting sessions. For Fleur, to paint or to draw was to breathe.

Fleur lived in Italy for a time, where she started to include her pet rabbit in occasional landscapes while painting en plein air. Living in the Italian mountains with her son Giulio, then 7 years old, their rabbit Tom was part of the family. Gradually, Tom began to take a more central place in the paintings, becoming the main theme himself, the landscape behind him almost incidental. More rabbits began to appear, their individual personalities beginning to shine through. They sometimes wore clothing and engaged in activities in their own magical world.

In retrospect, these mysterious and proud animals guided Fleur's creative life, opening up to her new and strange world. It was through this animal that Fleur was able to explore certain states of being that otherwise remained untapped. Through this animal, she created a visual and conceptual language. Her creative practice is centered around her interior world of dreams and imagination and by the transformation of mixing color on her palette.

You can see her work currently on display at the New Hampshire Art Association, up through April 28th. If you’re local to the Portsmouth, NH area, mark your calendars for Saturday, April 20th so you can attend Meet the Artist from 1 PM to 5 PM. Also upcoming, Fleur will be featured in next month's issue of Artists Magazine.

We are posting the artwork and the artist’s statements daily so check back often. 😃

Street photography allows me to capture random images that would otherwise go unnoticed. I like the challenge of seeking something to photograph that is poignant or amusing. I especially like to observe and photograph people interacting during their everyday lives. I find a candid photograph is more spontaneous and realistic than a set-up image, making the photo more authentic.

"Galaxy is an intimate look at the incredible richness of form and color, edges and textures that describe the botanical world, visual details available to any viewer who will take a moment, slow down and really see. If one can imagine this sunny garden scene from an insect's perspective, this is indeed a galaxy of delights. Though obviously relishing the representational qualities of my subject, Galaxy was conceived as an abstract, with each positive and negative shape given equal and loving attention within the composition. As such, there is no background, no unimportant shape or line. "

"Ode to an Encounter of Consequence" is inspired by an unfortunate incident in which my car hit a deer. A very traumatic event for me, I researched deer habitats extensively paying close attention to why they live so close to human residences. This is one painting of a collection of paintings inspired by this event.

During the first years of using acrylic paint, I experimented with various techniques in paint application, including the use of a balloon inflator for spreading. The wood panels of “Incognito” were originally covered in shiny paper, which gradually became covered with layers of paint. I think I was feeling hopeless about the painting when I started covering it with white paint blown around with the inflator. The white paint is disguising the rich colors underneath.

As I created these new works, I was keenly aware that every mark I made was made by one hand--my hand--and that the finished product would live and breathe as part of a world in which we all are tenants and share. An expression is synonymous with Mother Earth, leading to our departure from the stations of life, searching for new noise and passion, and empowering and encouraging change. In this conception, 'Nature' is not a source of material for production but the beginning and end of all life and culture. My work is centered around the main idea of being nowhere and everywhere, waltzing around cultural boundaries with beliefs and traveling through form and energy, attempting to incorporate conflict, balance, and harmony to shape the work's influences, thoughts, and hope for the same thing and shared moment.
